Giving Thanks

As we approach Thanksgiving, it is a good time to put into perspective the things that are truly important. It can be difficult to appreciate these things at times. Surely, the current state of affairs in Winchester and in our country are complicated and filled with uncertainty.

Our ability to fund quality public education and other public services in Winchester is constantly stretched. Financial help from the Commonwealth or the federal government is unlikely. Development of open spaces is relentless, despite the downturn in the residential market. The prospect of saving Hamilton Farm from development is daunting.

Our country is at war with little hope that we are making a difference. Terrorism and the spread of nuclear weapons capability are depressing to say the least.

Yet, with all of the gloom around us, we really do have much to be thankful for. We live and work in a community that cares about each other and will always help a family in need. Advances in medical technology and consumer productivity have created a quality of life that is the best it has ever been. Our children and grandchildren demonstrate great talent and capacity for positive social change.

It is always heartening to remember the lessons of our country’s first Thanksgiving, including the settlers’ perseverance and willingness to share with the native Americans. So, let us pause and give thanks at this time.
